Analysis of the match between Manchester United and Fulham
Ruben Amorim may well be surprised to see his successor at Manchester United, Michael Carrick, delivering a series of impressive victories. In just the last two Premier League rounds, Carrick led the Red Devils to convincing wins over both Manchester City and Arsenal.
Those results saw Carrick make history by becoming the first manager since February 2010 to guide United to back-to-back victories against teams that started the matchday at the top of the Premier League table. This impressive run has given the Red Devils a clear edge in the race for a top-four finish. Ahead of Round 24, United sit one point above Chelsea and two points clear of Liverpool, while extending their unbeaten streak to six league matches.
Heavy investment in attacking reinforcements during the summer transfer window is paying off, as United have scored in each of their last 11 Premier League games and conceded just once in their last three home matches at Old Trafford.
However, Carrick now faces another tough test, as Fulham under Marco Silva are also dreaming of European qualification. Since mid-December, the Cottagers have lost just one of their last eight matches across all competitions, winning five of them.
In the previous round, Harry Wilson emerged as Fulham’s hero, scoring a stoppage-time free kick to seal a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Brighton at Craven Cottage. Fulham currently sit seventh in the table, only four points adrift of the top four.
Notably, Marco Silva’s side held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage earlier this season. They only need to look back to February 2024 for their most recent victory at Old Trafford, though that remains their sole win there across the last 20 visits to the “Theatre of Dreams.”
